AUGUST 31, 2008 - HURRICANE GUSTAV BEARS DOWN

With Hurricane Gustav bearing down, and fast, on Southern Louisiana we are pulling back. Our reporting will continue, post-storm.

It seems surreal that just a few days we were standing on the beach in Grand Isle with Wilma Subra, discoverer of the Dead Zone, which at this moment appears to be Ground Zero for Gustav. That the oil rigs that we helicoptered over in the Gulf of Mexico just a few days ago have all now been shut down, their thousands of workers evacuated. And that Highway 1, the narrow, solitary road leading to the oil fields - its elevated bridge still under construction - may soon be flooded, its residents and businesses once again on the run.

Just a couple days ago we drove slowly through the 9th Ward in New Orleans and put hands on the brand new, 15-foot-tall cement levee guarding it. We'll be watching closely to see if it does its job. Our thoughts are with all the people of the region that so willingly and generously introduced us to their backyard.

From THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE this graphic shows an approximate representation of coastal areas under a hurricane warning (red), hurricane watch (pink), tropical storm warning (blue) and tropical storm watch (yellow). The orange circle indicates the current position of the center of the tropical cyclone. The black line and dots show the National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecast track of the center at the times indicated.
