Caral, Peru   Pyramids were abutted by small houses; as many as 20,000 once lived in Caral and its surrounding river valley. The site featured an amphitheater as well as several large ceremonial and housing complexes. It is thought to have been constructed 5,000 years ago, preceding the Incan empire.
